木下惠介是日本影坛的天王级导演，本片是他最著名的作品之一。故事描写一名母亲独力把两名女儿抚养成人，不惜从事黑市买卖，甚至出卖肉体，但女儿们却毫无感激之心，母亲最后只好以自杀了却残生。影片拍得十分感人，女主角望月优子的演出更是充满着感染力。木下惠介把现在与过去交替剪接，效果独特，本片入选为影史上最佳200部日本电影之一。
