喜八三部曲的头一部，其余两部为《浮草物语》和《东京之宿》，由坂本武饰演的草根从小人物喜八身兼母职，与儿子富夫住到东京贫民窟，可他的冲动性子却叫富夫吃尽苦头。喜八不自量力爱上漂亮女孩，失恋后又借酒消悉，弄得一家人好不狼狈。富夫生病了，喜八愈搞儿子病得愈重，治好儿子乱却欠下一身的债。剧本经小津改动后结局出人意表。小津儿时也住在东京贫民窟，自言用父亲形像塑喜八。喜八这乐天冲动派，与突贯小僧饰演的小大人，都令人看得怦然心动，是小津罕见落墨浓重的一对父子。本片曾经被日本《电影旬报》选为年度最佳电影。
From a story by "James Maki", the pseudonym often used by Ozu, "Passing Fancy" is the first installment of the "Kihachi Trilogy". This Kinema Junpo Best Film concerns the relationship between an illiterate brewery worker and his educated son. Kihachi is a flawed yet likable character whose impulses land him in trouble with those around him. The story focuses on his unrequited interest in a younger woman and the effect his infatuation has on both father and son. An early example of Ozu's masterful chronicling of the evolution of family ties and the minutiae of family life.
