本片乃《喜八三部曲》的最后一步,其余两部为《瞬间的幻想》及《浮草物语》。本片受到欧洲影评人高度评价,其中小津对低下层的穷苦市民生活点滴的刻划。可怜的喜八带着两个稚子为寻找工作四处奔波,几近走投无路,幸得昔日好友之帮助,终于找到工作,得以糊口。可是命运弄人,喜八此时遇上了同病相怜的两母女,少妇急需大量金钱去支付女儿的医疗费用,喜八唯有不顾一切,跑去偷钱。简单的故事与结构,衬托出喜八这个苦命爸爸可怜的遭遇,侧写日本战前贫穷的社会状况,一针见血。

“An Inn In Tokyo”is the final instalment of Ozu's “Kihachi Trilogy”,and also one of his finest silent works.In many ways,it anticipates Vittorio de Sica's Italian neorealist classic“The Bicycle Thieves”,as it focuses on the dignity of the individual and the vital details of the Depression in pre-war Japan.Kihachi is struggling with his two young songs as he tries his best to seek work.With the help of an old friend,Kihachi finally manages to find a job.However,in order to help the daughter of a single mother,he goes to steal from the rick.This demolishes all the hopes that he has for his life and the lives of his two young sons.
