故事发生在太湖边，一姓周渔民带领女儿琼珠、慧珠以打渔为生。一天，父女在市上卖鱼，被债主的收帐人遇见，拦路强行逼债。青年崔时俊路见不平出来相助。琼珠对时俊的仗义深表感谢，两人产生好感。时俊在艺专学习成绩优良，得到东家父女的喜爱，东家欲将女儿张国瑛配给时俊，崔父满口应承。但时俊不爱国瑛，拒绝婚事，父子为此反目。时俊去湖边寻访琼珠，不幸撞上石岩，被琼珠父女救回家中调养，时俊和琼珠情感日深。崔父得知独生子在渔民家，亲自去找并逼时俊与张家订婚，时俊不肯，崔父大怒，扬言脱离父子关系。时俊毅然离家，决心去上海谋生。行前征得周父同意，与琼珠订了婚。时俊在上海得到了追踪前来的国瑛的帮助，使他感激异常。但国瑛扣压了琼珠的来信，并假冒时俊写信给琼珠，称其已在上海另订婚姻。琼珠得信如晴天霹雳，愤而投湖，但被救。国瑛知此，深感内疚，说明真相，促成时俊和琼珠的婚姻。
