黄华仁出身书香门第，为人笃诚忠厚，却受到东西两邻欺侮。东邻黄猷和绰号黄矮子，凶横霸道，无事生非，动辄寻衅凌辱。华仁息事宁人，忍辱谦让。西邻白经济刁诈善谋，恣意愚弄，巧取豪夺。华仁不堪骚扰，请求本乡议会秉公调解。乡议会诸公不敢得罪势大财足的东西两邻，一味压制华仁委曲求全。华仁无奈，一再容忍。怎奈东邻得寸进尺，视华仁谦让为好欺，竟凭仗武力掠夺华仁家财。到此，华仁忍无可忍，会同妻子钟国芬合力御侮，经过勇敢斗争，终于打退恶邻。
